It's been one of the pleasures of my life to share these programs with you over the past few years. I'm so grateful to all of you who have listened, and especially to those who have gotten in touch.

I find now that I have too many competing priorities, so I've decided to put an end to my Podcasting activities, at least for the time being. I will still continue to be active online elsewhere, and may be posting items of interest here from time to time as well. If you're interested in keeping up with my exploits, here are some links.

My pal Neil Dixon has a wonderful PodNovel out, set in Edwardian London. TableRappers: Persistant Spirit is the story of the penultimate cynic on a collision course with the paranormal.

The story takes place at the dawn of the 20th Century. A diabolical crime forces one man to relive past grief and to depend on a forgotten friend.

The suspense is palpable in this excellent audio novel, available for free at the TableRappers Website.

I'm thoroughly enjoying this program for the story and the production. It's also fascinating to hear behind-the-scenes of the creative process.

Unedited On The Road to be published. David Pescovitz:

The original, unedited manuscript of On The Road that Jack Kerouac pounded out in three weeks on long rolls of paper will be published for the first time next year.

From the Boston Globe:

...In time to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the novel's publication, the version of "On the Road" that Kerouac wrote on the scroll will be published next year in book form for the first time, said John Sampas of Lowell, the executor of the writer's literary estate and the brother of his third wife, Stella. It will include some sections that had been cut from the novel because of references to sex or drugs...

The scroll contains numerous passages that were edited out of the book and uses the original names of characters who were closely modeled on friends of Kerouac, including fellow writers William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg...

It remains to be seen exactly how (publisher Viking Penguin) will present the original Kerouac story, which was typed as one freewheeling, single-spaced paragraph. Eager to write freely and continuously, without pausing to pull finished pages from his typewriter and insert new ones, Kerouac typed instead on 12-foot rolls of paper that he later Scotch-taped together, Sampas said...

Some specialists say they prefer the unedited version, which features a different first sentence than the published novel, as well as a more abrupt ending.

Net Neutrality Fails in Senate Committee

The Net Neutrality Amendment failed in the Senate Commerce Committee by a tie vote of 11-11, with all ten Democratic committee members voting in favor, along with Senator Snowe (a Republican) who introduced the amendment. The eleven remaining Republican members voted against it.

It is unlikely now that the final bill will pass in the full Senate, in my opinion. If that is the case it would effectively kill the telecommunications reform legislation for this session of Congress.

Hurricane Relief Message

I posted the following message this morning, urging listeners to keep the victims of Hurricane Katrina in your thoughts and prayers, and to donate if you can.

I donated at the American Red Cross Website this morning, and it only took a few minutes. My wife and I will also give blood at the next Red Cross drive in our town. You may wish to consider doing the same.

I'm probably asking for trouble with this one, but here's a little essay I wrote in response to some reaction we had to the last Podcast.

I would encourage anyone interested in these issues to research the matter for yourself.

People of good will may certainly have disagreements, and I'm not trying to foist my view of things on anyone. I'm simply presenting it. I would expect people all across the political spectrum to disagree with me on some of these issues, but please don't doubt either my personal commitment to the truth or the fact that these are (if nothing else) very well-informed, considered opinions.

Here's a note to any of my friends who are mentioned in the essay. I thought it best to blog about this rather than to impose further on the email list. You've expressed your views to me, and now you know mine. Let's agree to disagree agreeably, in good faith and mutual respect. Shall we?

On May 7th, our family participated in the Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure in Peoria, Illinois. I finally got around to editing some of the hours and hours of audio we recorded, and we'll be putting together Part I of our Race Podcast Special in the next few days. Look for a new show sometime next week.

In addition to much discussion concerning the cutest of all Race participants, this show will mark the Podcast debut of the most beautiful (and the smartest) woman in the entire history of the known Universe, my wife Claudia.

Also, I've been prodding Kip to sit down with a microphone and share some of his wit, wisdom, and selections from his copious written work. I'll feed that out as soon as I get it.
